It's been almost FIVE WEEKS since little Sophia joined our lives. On one hand it feels like it's been less than that. At the same time it feels like she's been ours forever. We love her so much and are continually grateful to the Lord for allowing us to have her. BUT this month hasn't been without it's trials - trivial as they are. Around week 3 we noticed that Sophie wasn't sleeping well anymore. She was getting fussier each day, too. Cameron was a colicky kid, so at first I thought that was it. But I started to notice a pattern to her fussiness, and before long we realized this was very different from colic. So we took her to the doc and he confirmed our suspicions that she has reflux. The problem isn't just the mass amounts of spit-up, but the acid that is burning her litle throat. That was what was making her so fussy! So the doc prescribed Prevacid and over the last week she has been getting much better! We still have to keep her upright for a full 20-30 minutes after each feeding (this is a huge pain at night), but overall she's getting much better.
The best thing is that she's starting to get smiley. I LOVE when babies start smiling because it just melts your heart! I'll keep my camera handy and try to capture this new phenomenon, but I'm sure you'll see it soon.
Aside from Sophie news, life is pretty normal. Cameron started pre-school on Monday and he's going two mornings a week. He loves it, though he was a little hesitant at first. Cam's such a laid-back kid and his teacher is REALLY gregarious! It was a little much for him at first. But he made friends quickly and he's excited to go now.
Miles continues to be a whirling dirvish. He has SO much energy and uses it to get into trouble. I am constantly on my toes with that kid! He just spends all day wandering the house and backyard looking for something to get into or break. We've learned that the discipline techniques that worked with Cam have very little (or no) effect on the force of nature that is Miles. I'm learning very quickly that some battles are worth fighting and others I need to just let go of and have a sense of humor about. Like two days ago when Miles discovered the water dispenser in our fridge door. Everytime I stopped looking at him for more than 10 seconds he would book it into the kitchen and stand there with his hand on the lever letting water pour down over his head, clothes and all over the kitchen floor. By the fifth time I had lost it and yelled, "NO WATER!" He just looked at me and smiled. Classic Miles.
Chase got the bad news that he did not pass his last section of the CPA so he has to take it again before April. That's great, because he has TONS of free time between now and April...right. Luckily the guy is some kind of genius and he'll get it done.
For my part I'm finally starting to feel somewhat normal again. I'm not LOOKING normal yet - the jogging stroller is calling my name. But I think I'm going to wait until I'm at least getting a decent night's sleep before I even bother to care about those nasty 20 pounds I have to lose. For now Sophie is helping me lose the weight by the sheer fact that she eats 12 times a day. That's gotta be helping me, right? And she is also helping me by LIVING in the baby carrier. Having her strapped to my chest all day long while I clean and take care of the kids can really take it out of me, so I hope it's burning some good calories, too.
Anyway, enough rambling. Here are some fun pictures. We went to the Ft. Worth Stockyards yesterday with the kids and got to see some longhorns up close. The boys loved every minute of it. On the way home Miles and Sophie fell asleep and Cam had to pretend to fall asleep, too.

I could totally tell that Cam was faking! Gaby is such a fake sleeper in the car, too.
Ah, reflux! Owen was a reflux baby, too. However, it never affected his sleeping. The kid slept 24/7 until he was about 3 months old. We used Prilosec and it was nasty. Really expensive, nasty and it didn't seem to change the volume of what he was spitting up, so we ended up not giving it to him after a couple months. Lydi also was a projectile vomiter, but with her, too she never seemed uncomfortable, you just needed to wear a rain slicker when holding her. I am so happy for you that the meds are helping her. Hopefully you will be getting some much needed sleep soon!!!
I'm not sure if you remember us from the good ole Wymount days...but I just happened to find your blog through someone in the ward...Chandler maybe. Anyway...I can't believe how much your family has change since I last saw you guys. Wow...3 kids. How fun! Love the stockyards. We lived in Ft Worth for about a year! Where are you guys at now??
Ah I want to go out there!
I am so sorry that Sophie is sad and reflux-y. :(
AND you look great, you dont look like you still have 20 to lose!
I'm not sure I can wait 2 more weeks to see you...maybe I'll come now. I'm glad Sophie is feeling better and that you can get some sleep. And happy birthday in 40 minutes (my time)!
Happy birthday, Sister! And seriously, who calls their kid a whirling dirvish?? I mean, how random is that?? Love you:)
Well, I did spell it wrong, but the meaning was absolutely spot on. Miles IS a dervish! Here is the definition according to dictionary.com: "One that possesses abundant, often frenzied energy." That is Miles through and through!
And here I didn't even know it was a real word. I thought you were pulling a Dr. Seuss on us... my bad. I never should have doubted your vocabularityousness:)
No more purple-mouthed Sophie! Hooray for you! I hope that means you are better. Mom will be on her way to make you some bread by the weekend...
awe, I loved seeing you and everyone, i can't believe you have a family of 5! crazy! I can't wait to move into that house down the street. ...i wish. But we will definately be there soon, YAY! I can't wait for our boys to be buddies! P.S. it's a boy!
