So last night Kathleen, Tori and I threw a kickin' shower for Jeni. At least, I think it turned out well. Good food, and good times. I forgot my camera so you'll have to wait until I get pics from Tori. Anyway, at the shower I noticed my friend Kelly had the BEST shade of lipstick on. And it got me thinking. I have never, ever found a good shade of lipstick. In fact, lipstick has always been a bit of a mystery to me. My best friend in highschool, Amanda, was a lipstick expert. The girl had 80 different shades that all looked fabulous on her and she was never seen with naked lips. The minute she stopped eating she'd be applying a new coat...without a mirror! But me? The ugly sidekick. I'd be glumly pulling out my black Chapstick and tightening the plaid shirt tied around my waist. Sigh...Every shade I've ever tried has just made my lips look really silly. The only time I was able to wear lipstick without looking lame was for that brief moment in the '90's when matte brown lips were cool. I was able to pull that off...sort of.
So, am I the only one out there? Is this just another sign of my Ugly Mom-ness? How do I remedy this bare-lip situation?

I'm still a big fan of Clinique's Super Lip Balm. Actually, more than a fan, I think I'm officially addicted to the stuff. Plus, it now comes in 12 different shades, so you have just a hint of color, rather than heavier lipstick, which is great for summer. (I kind of sound like a commercial, huh?)
Or just ask Jeanne...she's the expert on lipstick. Do you remember when we dared her to go 1 week without using lipstick? I think it nearly killed her.

OK Anna, in honor of your post, come visit me on my blog. I have a confession to make.

Lip gloss!! That is the perfect remedy to have just a bit of color without going overboard.

In my recollection, you had quite a "bag of balm" at one point. Which was good, because your lips are just naturally colorful, and all you need is balm/gloss. That's your lipstick problem in a nutshell. Adding lipstick is adding too much color on top of already perfectly colored lips. Just shine 'em up if you want to get all fancy.

Chrysta, you remember correctly. I had an enormous orange bag full of lip balm. None of it was tinted, though. Only a few were shiny. I just liked having lots of flavors.

I never used to leave the house without lipstick and then I had kids. Now I don't even wear it for church, really, and it's mostly because I prefer to be able to smother my boys with kisses without leaving a big ol' mess behind. Gimme baby cheeks over lipstick any day! (But that doesn't mean I don't buy any...)

Okay, so I'm now admitting to blog stalking Deb. But it's your fault for sending me all of the links. Before it was just Alyssa and Christy, who I actually knew, so I didn't feel so bad about blog stalking. Anywho, I loved her post about the perfect shade, but felt wierd adding a comment to her blog, so I'm adding it to yours. My latest "perfect shade" is achieved by applying Wet 'n Wild lip pencil (yep, you read that right, it's a whopping 99 cents!) in shade #666 (again, you read that right) and then applying clear super lip balm on top. Who knew I'd end up loving the cheapest lip pencil out there?

Bare matte was a 90s thing? why hasn't anyone told me?...lol
I recommend lip gloss. Mac and clinique have great tinted lip glosses so shiny and sultry! so...anna!
Kickin' baby shower by the way..

i havn't worn it since being married. Brian wont kiss me or come close if I have anything on them. this bothers me but I have become used to it now. In high school though I wore this radical RED liner that I would color in my whole lips and make them SUPER shiny afterward with the glossiest gloss ever.

AND the shower was wicked!! I loved everything about it!!

I always find a shade.......usually a mary kay one......then I wear it until they discontinue it.......then I'm screwed and have to start at square one to find a new one. Good thing I only wear it to church and anywhere I think someone from church will see me.

I've recently become addicted to the lip gloss from Bath and Body works in "Bare Mint." It has peppermint oil in it that makes your lips tingle. Love it!

I think wearing lip stick is kind of like wearing hats. Even though it might actually look fine on you, you have to have the personality and confidence to really pull it off.

ha! well, wearing lip stick has been a sort of goal I made a year ago...knowing that celebs never leave home without it. I always felt sort of silly wearing it, but I'm getting used to how it looks on me know. I actually found the color in a magazine article that taught you how to pick out the color and wear it right. I went to the store with the magazine in hand and bought exactly what it said. It's Cover Girl 952 Bold Bordeaux. Just force yourself for a while and you'll get used to it. GREAT shower by the way...did I win the toilet paper thing?

On more comment after reading all the other comments. Yes, lip gloss is good, but I'm actually liking this stick better...gloss is sometimes gooy and heavy...this stick is a matte finish and kind of tingly on the lips...I just put some on and rub it in with my finger...I do kiss my kids less when I have it on though :( Just try it!

I'm so with you - I can never, ever, ever find the right shade and thus avoid it entirely.
